Team Spotlight: Ben Tremewan | Quantity Surveyor

July 18, 2022

On this week’s team spotlight, we speak to Ben Tremewan, one of our Quantity Surveyors from the Stockton-on-Tees office. Ben’s work focuses on project finances in construction, estimating costs, quantities, and project timelines.

How did you get into the industry?

I’ve worked in the Construction Industry for 7 years now and it feels a lot longer! I left school at 18 following my A Levels, bright eyed and bushy tailed and thought it would be a great idea to join the Construction Industry. I managed to secure a job at around Christmas time in my final year of school, so I was ready to go once I completed my exams. I started out working in the office four days a week whilst attending Teesside University on day release to complete a HNC in Building Studies. Following completing my HNC I moved onto the brand-new Chartered Surveying Apprenticeship Degree course at Northumbria University whilst carrying out the same day release format. Having completed my degree a year ago, I joined Steel River Consultants and I haven’t looked back!

What inspired you to become a Quantity Surveyor?

I fell into being a Quantity Surveyor. At school I didn’t understand the various jobs that are available throughout construction and there are more opportunities than you could ever imagine. One day my dad advised me to explore Quantity Surveying, I liked the sound of it and the mix off office/site-based variation, so I thought I’d give it a go. Seven years later, I’m still here so I must enjoy it!

What is your favourite project you worked on and why?

I don’t have a favourite project as every project is different and special in its own way – no two projects are the same. I think that’s one of the reasons I enjoy my job, the variety and challenges are different, and you never know what project you could be working on next.

What advice would you give to people aspiring to do your role?

To go for it, get stuck in and work hard. The ideal way of learning is gaining the experience in the office or on site whilst completing your degree. I believe that makes for a better-rounded experience and enables a person to have the real-world experience as well as a degree to back that up. There are so many opportunities and never-ending work within Construction.
